You must first determine what you want your website to be optimized for before worrying about whether it is optimized. Understanding how your target audience searches for your products or services is the first step in ranking or prioritizing keywords or phrases. You can prioritize keywords you’d like your website to appear for in search engine results once you conduct some basic research related to how and how often your audience uses various search terms. Then you can start thinking about how you can optimize your site for the terms you are targeting.

On-page optimization:

It is easy to understand factors that influence how well your website is optimized by looking at tactics that are carried out on your website versus tactics that occur elsewhere (off-site optimization). For most small organizations, on-site and on-page SEO factors can make the biggest difference, and should be your top priority. Off-site strategies will have less impact if you don’t do the basic on-site tactics well.

Off-page Optimization:

Search engine optimization off-site (off-page) is anything done on a website besides your own, but which affects your website’s ranking in search engine results. To begin with, I recommend ensuring you have your on-page ducks in a row first, as a solid foundation will make your off-page efforts more productive. By establishing your baseline, you can then implement off-site tactics to help take your site to the next level.
