Debunking Myths about IT Recruitment Firms

IT Staffing agencies and IT recruitment agencies have entered into the spotlight with recent job scarcity problems and economic troubles throughout the country. Yet despite this fact, many people still do not know exactly what an IT staffing agency in New York does. Some view them like talent agents, or people who talk up their clients to get them hired. Others view recruitment firms as nothing more than a company that trades in promises left unfulfilled.

To clear some of the cobwebs and take away a bit of the mystery surrounding recruitment firms, we have compiled a list of common recruiter myths and the truth about each:

Myth: Recruiters don’t know anything about the field they are recruiting for.

Fact: Most recruiters must have a general knowledge of their field in order to be competitive and effective. Many attend industry conferences and lectures to stay abreast of the latest technologies, decisions, and directions in which their field is headed.

Myth: All recruiting is the same.

Fact: Recruiting for warehouse positions and for high level customer service or executive assistant positions are entirely different on a number of levels. The candidates looking for jobs at warehouses are generally of a different educational level than those seeking high level business positions. The expectations of the job seekers and the manners in which they approach job-seeking may be entirely opposite.

Similarly, companies looking for employees are seeking to pull from two very different client pools and will look for diverse qualities in prospective employees. A recruiter working in the field of information technology will approach recruitment in an entirely different style than one in public landscaping and construction.

Myth: Recruiting is easy. All you have to do is look at job boards and find candidates to fill client positions as quickly as possible.

Fact: Recruiters do their best to fit the right candidates with clients in every situation. This means knowing their candidates strengths and weaknesses and being able to predict whether an individual will succeed in a certain position. It also means knowing exactly what is required of the client, and which types of candidates would be best suited to fill the position and succeed in that specific work environment.

For example, if a candidate has been trained in typing, computing, accounting, and customer service, then putting them into an intensive warehouse position with long hours of heavy lifting and standing does not make sense. Companies and businesses continue using recruiters because they have success with the candidates that recruiting firms send them. If recruiters did not send good candidates who worked out well for the client, then they would soon be out of a job.

Myth: Recruiters are rude.

Fact: Recruiters deal with hundreds of calls and emails a day, and have to prioritize their time and energy. They are simply not able to respond to every single call. However, they will make the effort to respond to people who show persistence and drive when pursuing a new job.
